Iowa Trappers Assn., Inc. Directors Summer Meeting
                                                                                    June 24, 2007

Call to Order
President Spencer Hill called the summer director’s meeting to order at 10:18 am at the Iowa State Tree Nursery,
Ames, IA.

Roll Call
Roll call was answered by 3 officers, 9 directors, 3 directors at large, 2 proxy representatives, NTA director George
Scalf, FTA director Dean Mitchell and DNR Ron Andrews.

New Directors
  • Dan Dalton turned in his letter of resignation.
  • We have 5 Districts that are open. They are: 1,6,8,16,24

Approve Agenda
  • Ron Andrews asked to be moved up on the agenda, since he has to leave.
  • Motion made by Tom Gilman to approve the Agenda. Seconded by Craig Sweet. Carried.
  • Minutes
  • Motion made by Ed Grillot to approve the minutes. Seconded by Craig Sweet. Carried.

Secretary’s Report
  • Dita Mallon reported that current membership is at 1614 with Lifetime membership at 287.
  • Dita Mallon stated that Matt Grillot asked if she was interested in taking over the maintenance of the ITA Web
    Page. Dita has agreed and will check into web design software.

Treasurer’s Report
  • Chris Grillot reported on current finances.
  • Dita Mallon assisted Chris in destroying old records. Records from 1999 to present were kept as needed for IRS.
  • The new ITA trailer is at Chris and Ed Grillot’s.
  • Chris Grillot reported on the credit card on question of cancellation fees. There is a cancellation fee of $250 in
    the first year.
  • Chris Grillot suggested going with the Quad Cities Bank Card.
  • Motion made by Dwayne Kay to go ahead with the credit card, going through the Quad Cities Bank with the
    option to cancel after the 1st year. Seconded by Jim Mallon. Carried.


Correspondence
  • Ed Clouse needs to borrow some fur for the Marion County Women of the Outdoors on July 28. Anyone
    available to help would be appreciated.
  • Gene Purdy represented ITA at the FFA convention and received a special citation plaque on behalf of the ITA.
  • Cody Hutton received a thank you from the Iowa Taxidermist Association.
  • Craig Sweet received a check for $900 from the Friends of the NRA Grant for our fall convention.
  • Dwayne Kay reserved 8 rooms at the Host hotel for the Pheasant Fest in Minneapolis, Minnesota Jan 18-20.
  • Those going to the Pheasant Fest need to contact Dwayne Kay to reserve a room
  • Motion made by Wayne Funke to go with the green banner for slogan, “trappers control predators at no cost to
    hunters”. Second by Gene Purdy. Carried.

Chris Grillot received the following correspondence:
  • Thank you from the Iowa FFA and photos from the 1st and 2nd place winners of the Outdoor Recreation Award.
  • Thank you from TIP for renewing our voting membership.
  • Thank you for the NTA, $1000 donation for legal defense and $5000 annual commitment.
  • Received a donation request from US Sportsmen’s Alliance, Trailblazer Sweepstakes participation and sponsor
    membership certificate.
  • A request to have a booth at the Iowa Sportsmen’s Show at the UNI Dome March 7-9 2008
  • Motion made by Ed Grillot to have a booth at the UNI Dome Iowa Sportsmen’s Show for the cost of $365.
    Seconded by Jim Noneman. Carried.
  • Chris received a request to place ad in the NTA Convention Program.
  • Motion made by Ed Clouse to place a full page ad in the NTA Convention Program Book. Seconded by Jim
    Mallon. Carried
  • At this time Chris has not received any written information for sponsoring a table at the NTA Awards Banquet.
  • Motion made by Gene Purdy to sponsor a table at the NTA Awards Banquet. Seconded by Tom Gilman. Carried.
  • Dita Mallon received a request from the New Hampshire Trappers Association for a donation for their annual fall
    auction.
  • Spencer Hill received the following:
  • Wisconsin Trappers Association working on legislation on colony traps and they are looking for information on
    colony traps.
  • Pennsylvania Trappers Association is asking for a donation for their banquet.
  • Maine Trappers Association asking if we would like to put ad in their 50th year news letter.
  • Missouri Trappers Association mailed the ITA 30 tickets for $20.00.
  • Illinois resident is looking for trapping photos.
  • Robert Palm by Fairfield asking for support and to spread the word about the Maharashi Vedic City trying to
    condemn their land and take over their land and ban trapping, hunting and fishing.

DNR Report
  • Ron Andrews thanked those that attended the meeting for the Bobcat season.
  • Bobcat season was approved for the bottom 2 tiers of Iowa. With a quota of 150 and all catches must be
    reported to the local DNR.
  • River Otter season is still the same with the only change of a 48 hour grace period to notify the DNR.
  • Beaver season will end April1st instead of April 15th.

District Direct
  • Jim Noneman reported on the North American Fur Trade program that he is the host of for the grade school in
    his area. It is about a 2 week program.
  • Craig Sweet thanked those that attended the meeting for the Bobcat season.
  • Dan Reich did several 4H demonstrations on trapping.
  • Gene Purdy reported that he cooked a young beaver for a 5th grade class to eat. The kids from the really
    enjoyed it.
  • George Scalf reported on the youth day in Ottumwa and it is growing every year.
  • George Scalf stressed that we need to form a Sportsmen’s coalition in the state of Iowa.
  • Spencer Hill reported on a youth day held in his area.

FTA Report
  • Dean Mitchell reported the  FTA Education Committee is distributing business card size animal information cards
    to youth.
  • The FTA has been busy with the Mississippi Wildlife Refuge, Minnesota and Maine Lawsuits and BMP.
  • NAFA presented the FTA with a $1000 check.
  • FTA has created a new lifetime membership card.
  • Dean reported on the acceptance of nominations for President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and
    Governing Board.
  • The FTA 2008 Convention will be held June 19-22 in Columbia, Mo.
  • The 2009 Convention will be held in Mena, Arkansas.
  • The FTA Proactive committee has created a business card CD.

NTA Report
  • George Scalf reported on the regional conventions.
  • NTA is taking applications for office manager and convention coordinator.
  • George Scalf reported that Past ITA Director Don Luke passed away.
  • Motion made by Dan Reich to send $50 to Don Luke memorial. Seconded by Gene Purdy. Carried

Fur Coat
  • Ed Grillot reported that he and Tom Walters picked up the fur coat for Miss Iowa at Groenwald Fur. Groenwald’s
    donated $500 towards the coat.
  • The fur coat was well received by Miss Iowa.

2007 Fall Convention – Southwest
  • Craig Sweet reported that the fairgrounds are just about finished.
  • Craig Sweet presented the patch for the convention. Chris Grillot will order 75 patches for the convention
  • Chris Grillot stated that dealer tables are $20 and Tailgaters are $10.
  • Motion by Dave Plueger to raise dealer tables to $25 with 2 gate admissions included. Seconded by Wayne
    Funke. Carried
  • Motion by Ed Clouse to raise tailgate fee to $15. Seconded by Dennis Johnson. Carried
  • Directors meeting will be on Friday at 1:00pm
  • Membership meeting Saturday at 1:30pm

2008 NTA Convention
  • Spencer Hill stated that volunteers are needed to help with the NTA Convention. Chairman’s are needed for
    gates, dealer buildings, tailgaters and campers.

2009 Fall Convention – Northeast
  • Dwayne Kay reported that the Northeast and Northwest will team up for the 2009 convention.
  • Considering Humboldt for the ITA convention site.










Unfinished Business
  • Ed Clouse expressed concerns about the Lifetime Investment fund.
  • Motion made by Dan Reich to sell Investment fund as soon as possible and place in a 1 year CD. Seconded by
    Jim Mallon.
  • Amendment made to motion by Jim Mallon to place in either a 1 year CD or a money market, which ever pays
    more interest, at Chris Grillot’s discretion. Seconded by Jim Noneman. Carried.
  • Motion made to sell the lifetime investment fund as soon as possible and place in a 1 year CD or a Money
    Market which ever pays more interest, at Chris Grillot’s discretion. Carried
  • Jim Mallon inquired about the “Circle of Life DVD”. Chris Grillot has 10 copies available.

New Business
  • Director at large election:
  • Ed Clouse nominated Cody Hutton
  • Ed Grillot nominated Jim Mallon
  • Craig Sweet nominated Dave Plueger
  • Motion by Ed Grillot to have nominations cease. Tom Gilman Seconded. Carried
  • Director at large are Jim Mallon and Dave Plueger.
  • Scholarship committee is Dennis Johnson, Dan Reich and Dave Plueger.
  • Motion made by Tom Gillman to purchase the 30 raffle tickets for $20 from the Missouri Trappers Association.
    Seconded by Dan Reich. Carried.
  • Motion made by Dan Reich to send $25 to New Hampshire and Pennsylvania Trappers Association. Seconded
    by Dave Plueger. Defeated
  • Motion made by Ed Grillot to purchase $100 worth of FTA animal information cards at .50 a piece. Seconded by
    Cody Hutton. Carried.
  • Dan Reich will make a board to display plaques awarded to the ITA for the year.
